What Happens Inside a Gulf Shores Home While You’re Away

A closed-up coastal home doesn’t stay the way you left it. It changes slowly, and you notice all of it at once when you walk back in.

Sand is the first thing. It comes in on the last visit’s feet and settles into grout lines, stair treads, rug fibers, and sliding door tracks. In the tracks it does more than look bad. It grinds against the rollers every time the door opens.

Humidity is the second. Many owners set the thermostat high while they’re gone to save on power. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A warm, closed house on the Gulf can drift above that. Dust clings to surfaces, rooms smell stale, and closets pick up a musty note.

Then there’s everything that settles while nobody is looking. Dust builds on ceiling fan blades and light fixtures. Cobwebs fill high corners and porch ceilings. Salt film dulls windows, balcony glass, and railings. Decks and patios collect sand, leaves, and whatever the last storm blew in.

None of this is a crisis. But it adds up to a day of chores at the start of a trip you planned for months. That’s why Gulf Shores and Baldwin County trust our local handyman to cover repairs and to-do lists when needed.

Clean, Check, Call: Your First Day Back

Whether you do it yourself or hire it out, it helps to sort what you find into three groups.

Clean. These are the things that just need work: dust, sand, cobwebs, salt film, and kitchens and bathrooms that sat unused.

Check. These are the things a cleaning should notice but can’t fix: a water stain on a ceiling, a soft spot in a floor or windowsill, a sliding door that drags, a closet that smells musty no matter what. They are early signs of a moisture problem or worn hardware.

Call. These are the items from the Check list that need a repair. A stain might mean drywall repair. A soft sill might mean wood rot repair. A musty smell that keeps coming back may need a look from our mold remediation team.

That third step is where most cleaning companies stop. Ours doesn’t, because the same local team that cleans your home also repairs it.

What Our New Cleaning Services Cover

We built our cleaning services around second homes, seasonal properties, and coastal houses, not weekly maid visits. There are three ways owners use them.

Deep cleaning. A detailed, whole-home reset that gets past surface cleaning: baseboards, fans, fixtures, under and behind accessible furniture, and the sand that hides in every entry. See what’s included on our residential deep cleaning page.

Second Home Deep Clean & Seasonal Reset. Our most complete service for owners returning after time away. It includes the deep clean plus patio or deck sweeping, a final inspection, and photo reporting. It starts at $795 for a five-bedroom home. We price by the home, not by the hour, so you know the number before work begins.

Pre-arrival cleaning. We finish the work while you’re still at home, then send photos once the final inspection is done. You walk in, unpack, and start your trip.

Add-ons like inside-the-fridge and oven cleaning, interior windows, and linen service are available too. Right now we focus on deep cleans and seasonal resets rather than recurring weekly visits or rental turnovers.

Why Photo Reports Matter When You’re Hundreds of Miles Away

If you live out of state, you can’t stop by to see how the house is doing. A photo report closes that gap.

After the cleaning and final inspection, you get pictures of the home’s condition. You see that the work was done. You also see anything that looked off, like a new stain, a loose rail, or a drip under a sink, while there’s still time to deal with it before your trip.

Over time, those dated photos also become a simple record of how the home looked season to season. That record is useful to have whenever questions come up about the property.

When to Schedule Gulf Shores Second Home Cleaning

The best time is as soon as you know your travel dates. A few windows fill up first:

  • The holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas visits bring owners back after the long fall gap.
  • Snowbird season. Winter residents arriving in January and February want the house ready on day one.
  • Spring break and summer openings. Homes closed since fall need a full reset before the busy months.
  • The end of hurricane season. Storm season runs through November 30, and a reset afterward clears the sand and debris it leaves behind.

If a storm did more than leave a mess, start with hurricane cleanup and haul-away before the cleaning.

Questions to Ask Any Cleaning Company Before You Hand Over the Keys

Hiring someone to clean a home you won’t be in is a trust decision. Ask these before you book:

  1. Is it priced per home or per hour? A per-home price, in writing, tells you the full cost up front.
  2. What’s included, exactly? Get the scope in writing, including what counts as an add-on.
  3. Are you insured? Someone will be working in your home while you’re gone.
  4. How do you handle access? Ask how keys, codes, and gate access are stored and returned.
  5. Will I get photos? If you’re out of state, this is how you know the job was done.
  6. What happens if you find a problem? A good answer is “we photograph it, tell you, and quote the fix in writing.”

Laughing Gull is licensed and insured, and every job starts with clear written pricing.

FAQs About Second Home Cleaning in Gulf Shores

How far ahead should I schedule a cleaning before I arrive?
As soon as you know your dates. Holiday weeks and the start of snowbird season book up first, so earlier is better.

Do I need to be in town for the cleaning?
No. Most second-home owners aren’t. We complete the work while you’re away and send photos after the final inspection.

Can you fix problems you find during the cleaning?
Yes. Repairs aren’t part of the cleaning price, but our handyman team can quote them in writing. You decide what to approve.

Should I schedule a cleaning when I leave for the season, too?
Many owners do. A reset at the end of a stay means the home sits clean while it’s empty, and the next arrival takes less work.

Is a Seasonal Reset the same as your home opening and closing service?
No. The Seasonal Reset is cleaning. Home opening and closing covers getting the house working: systems checked, moisture checked, and repairs done. Many owners book both for the same arrival.
